We started off my final day in Georgia with hungover Chinese food for breakfast/lunch, and then Mexican food for dinner. These folks were all so welcoming to me, they felt like old friends though I’d only known them for days. After leaving Georgia, I headed north, through South Carolina, the corner of North Carolina, and into Kentucky.
The photos above were deliberate long-exposure shots, but I had no idea how most of the shots would play out since I was constantly fiddling with my exposure times and dealing with shifting light-levels from the passing sources. I love how these came out. Each one feels a little like a fingerprint or a snowflake, some unique little piece of chaos, a moment captured, motion and light and shadow, frozen. The next day, I left for Kentucky. I got stopped by Kentucky police for having out of state plates, and I also ended up stopped on their highway for a while while they blocked off traffic, which I’m pretty sure they did in an attempt to catch me after I had evaded a different officer who would have caught me speeding had I not exited the highway and stopped for gas immediately. I didn’t get a ticket, but I did lose an hour and a half to the authorities’ search for… well, me.
My hosts in Kentucky were known as KillaCali and Sunblast. I know their actual names, but I think they’d be happier to know I remember their WoW handles than their real names, maybe I’m mistaken (D, I know I probably got yours wrong a little but you started a new character every month bro, you gotta cut me some slack if you see this). Sunblast, above, was responsible for walking the dog, but given how gorgeous the walk was I didn’t mind accompanying him one bit. I didn’t stay in Kentucky for too long, didn’t want to wear out my welcome, but they treated me like family while I was here, and I got to join them and their extended family for a little barbecue.
Ahh, “I <3 Sluts,” prime uncle attire. Can I just point out how hyped little man on the bottom right is? I love how happy he looks in this whole sequence, he’s just hyped his bro is going into lift-off. I appreciated being able to spend time with this family. I think I ate like 5 ears of corn. I remember the corn being so, insanely good.
I guess I kinda screwed up my post-length pacing, after the next few shots I don’t have much else from Kentucky. We did get locked out of the car and have to spend about 2 hours devising a way to break in without damaging the car. And eventually, we did. At the time I was about as stoned as a quarry, so it felt like a major accomplishment.
That’s it for Kentucky, click below to check out the final leg of my journey, from KY->CA.
